I did a shoot two weeks ago. The setup was a bedroom with not a lot of room to move. I wanted to add some moves so I rented a shoulder rig but then I realized that I still cannot do smooth walking shots. And without a side focus pulling mechanism, I cannot do any free hand style tilting and panning either. (I had a makeshift can-opener style FF, then i realize that I cannot go over the camera and stare at the marking while shooting!)

So, follow focus it is!

After tons of research, I bit the bullet and decided to go with Redrock for follow focus. It was tempting to start with something decent but cheaper like Jag35’s D|Focus but since I notice I always want to upgrade down the road, I started one step higher this time. Plus, Redrock is such an industry standard here in LA that resell should be a lot easier.

(Soon, I’m gonna have to upgrade my 50mm 1.8 to 1.4 since it’s pretty much impossible to pull focus on that 1.8)

I’ve been looking all over online trying to figure out all the little pieces that come with the Redrock bundle until I came across the assembly video

So much clearer than reading! Neither BH or Redrock has pictures of the parts or exploded version on the product page.

For now, I’m going with getting pieces off Craigslist to get the FF and tripod mount first. Hopefully, that’ll satisfy my need for a while.  ahhh, a cage or shoulder mount would be really nice though…
